New apartments bring $16.6 million in investments to the Carriage Town Neighborhood

WHO: Communities First, Inc., a Flint-based nonprofit has invited Sheldon Neeley, Mayor, City of Flint; Cynthia Neeley, Michigan State House Representative, District 34; Jerri Winfrey-Garter, Council Member, City of Flint; Dan Kildee, Congressman for Michigan’s 5th District; Domonique Clemons, Commissioner, Genesee County Board of Commissioners Dallas Gatlin, Representative, Carriage Town Neighborhood Association; Angela Detwiler, Financial Analyst, Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSDHA); Dave Lurvey, President, Lurvey Construction, and others for a ground breaking to celebrate the beginning of construction of the Grand on University, a $16.6 million, 48-unit multi-family housing development.

Founded in 2010, the mission of Communities First, Inc. is to build healthy, vibrant communities through economic development, affordable housing and innovative programming. The organization serves approximately 35,000 individuals annually across Michigan and Indiana.

WHAT: Communities First, Inc. will host an in-person ground-breaking for the Grand on University. This 48-unit mixed-income development provides much needed housing for Flint families. The development will feature 43 affordable units and 5 market rate units.

The first floor will be dedicated to commercial space, making the property a mixed-use investment in Flint’s Carriagetown Neighborhood. Along with encouraging businesses in the area, the project is environmentally conscious and will be Silver Certified by the National Green Building Council.

This MSHDA funded development is developed by Communities First, Inc. and RAD Conversion Specialists, LLC. The architecture firm for this project is Sedgewick & Ferweda, and the lead contractor is Lurvey Construction. This project is supported by ELGA Credit Union, Cinnaire, and Fifth Third Bank.
