Sybyl Award Nominations Open Aug. 31, 2018

Sybyl Award Marks Tenth Anniversary in December 2018

Plans “Sunset” Celebration and Last Call for Nominees

The Sybyl Award Selection Committee is pleased to announce the Tenth Anniversary — and final installment — of the annual Sybyl Award.

Since 2008, the Sybyl Award has recognized nominees and recipients from Genesee County who exhibit the qualities of the Award’s namesake, Sybyl McPeake Atwood. Atwood was regarded by many as the “grand dame” of the volunteer and human services sector in Flint and Genesee County, serving for more than four decades in leadership roles at Resource Genesee, United Way’s First Call for Help; and the original Volunteer Bureau (founded by the Junior League of Flint in 1966).

During her time in this community, Sybyl assisted tens of thousands of people in finding social services and volunteer opportunities for themselves or others. Each year since Atwood’s death in 2007, the Sybyl Award Selection Committee has honored her legacy by recognizing individuals who epitomize Sybyl’s ferocious energy, love for people, and dedication to community.

Nominees are judged based on a number of criteria, including:

  • Demonstrating leadership through excellence, creativity, and commitment.
  • Providing valuable service to improve the quality of life for others.
  • Encouraging a sense of community and nurture community connections.
  • Helping others to realize their own potential to make a positive difference in their own community.

Nominees must also reside in, as well as work and/or volunteer in, Genesee County.

Nomination forms can be found online at www.SybylAward.com (the website allows for online completion and online submission of the form OR the downloading, printing, and completion of the nomination form). Forms may also be obtained by contacting Lindsey Younger at 810.813.5709 or at SybylAward2018@gmail.com. Nominations open on Friday, August 31, and close on Friday, October 12.

The final Sybyl Award Celebration event, where all current nominees will be honored and where one or more 2018 Sybyl Award recipients will be announced, will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2018 from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. The celebration will take place at the Durant-Dort Factory One facility, located in Flint’s historic Carriage Town neighborhood. Information about ticket sales and table sponsorships can be found at www.SybylAward.com.

The Tenth Anniversary of the Sybyl Award will mark the award’s final year. As part of the program on December 6, all previous Sybyl Award nominees and recipients from 2008 – 2017 (along with all current nominees) will be invited to attend. A very special announcement regarding a new and permanent way to honor the important legacy of Sybyl McPeake Atwood will also be announced at the event.
