City of Flint Announces Search for New Director of Planning and Development

Flint, Michigan – July 30, 2015 – The City of Flint’s Director of Planning and Development Megan Hunter has announced her intention to resign her position at the end of August. A nationwide executive search is currently underway to find a replacement for Hunter.

The position is appointed and serves directly under the City Administrator and the department includes the Divisions of Building & Safety Inspections, Blight Elimination & Neighborhood Stabilization, Community & Economic Development, Zoning & Case Management, Planning, and Parks & Recreation.

In addition to exercising general supervision over professional, technical, and clerical positions within the department and its divisions, the Director is also responsible for the coordination and implementation of many of the Master Plan objectives. With a small team of 24 full time and 2 part time employees, the department has been able to carry out 118 projects and strategies outlined in the Master Plan within the last year.

As stated in the posting, the Director of Planning & Development is responsible for ensuring the public safety, health, and well-being of Flint’s residents, businesses and visitors through targeted investment and rational, well-designed and physically integrated land use and development that advances economic prosperity, eliminates blight and stabilizes neighborhoods, protects the environment, and promotes a better quality of life in the City.

Hunter has served in the director position for the last two years. Prior to that, she served as the Chief Planning Officer tasked with leading the development of the City’s first Master Plan in over fifty years. Hunter will be returning to California to be closer to family and continue her work in community and economic development.

On her departure, Hunter said, “I am sad to be leaving Flint, which has the most resilient and dedicated residents and employees I have ever known. Despite the City’s challenges, our citizens continue to fight to make Flint a better place to live. Now we are beginning to see those on the ground changes.  I believe Flint has a bright future.”
