Flint, MI, July 16, 2019– Join edible flint as we celebrate Flint gardens, hoop houses and farms at the 11th edible flint Food Garden Tour. This special event will feature local gardeners, explore different gardening techniques and highlight all the healthy produce grown in the City of Flint. This event will also celebrate all the gardeners, gardens and community partners that have made the edible flint Food Garden Tour and local food movement so special over the past 11 summers.
This edible flint event will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at The Flint Farmers’ Market from 3 pm- 8 pm. The Food Garden Tour kicks-off with a Pre-Tour Community Partner exhibit featuring local farmers and local organizations dedicated to healthy lifestyles and gardening in Genesee County. The 11th Annual Food Garden tour offers 3 experience opportunities for participants who can choose 1 of 2 bus routes or can select to tour by bike. After the tour, participants return to the Flint Farmers’ Market for an ice cream social and great fun! Registration is open and the cost is $10 for the tour and great dessert. Healthy food access has been a significant goal of edible flint’s programming over time, and the 1,519 food gardens in Flint that edible flint has supported over the last 9 years (124 of which are community gardens) have contributed to healthy food access and blight elimination for residents. Edible Flint formed in 2009 and since has hosted 10 Food Garden Tours; offered 9 years of training classes on urban food gardening; and distributed over 2,654 Garden Starter veggie kits for Flint’s food gardens over the past 9 years.
