(FLINT, Mich. April 29, 2016) — The Mott Community College (MCC) Board of Trustees approved a resolution April 25 allowing the College to seek a voter-approved renewal for its ten-year operating millage on the August 2, 2016 election ballot. A renewal of this operating millage was last approved by voters in 2007.
“We want to make it clear that the College is not requesting an increase in our millage rate,” said Board Vice Chairperson Dr. John Snell, “This is a request to renew the existing rate.” Currently, property owners pay .6410 mills which is .6410 cents for every $1,000 of taxable value. For example, a house worth $100,000 would have a taxable value (State Equalized Value – SEV) of $50,000 and the homeowner would pay $32.05 per year.
MCC is seeking a renewal to be able to continue providing the educational, economic, community, and workforce development opportunities and services currently offered to students and community stakeholders. The ability to provide these programs in their current forms would be jeopardized without the revenue generated each year by the operating millage, which would otherwise expire in 2017.
“The operating millage presently generates a total of $5.7 million per year for the College,” said MCC President Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea. “We appreciate the support of the community through this millage, and take seriously our role as stewards of these funds. We want to continue to be able to provide a high-quality and affordable education, outstanding support services for our students, economic and workforce development opportunities for the region, and community enrichment activities for everyone,” she added.

Faculty and administrators work closely with industry to develop academic programs that are aligned with the needs of the 21st Century workplace. MCC offers the general community access to free programs including art exhibits; music and choral recitals; lectures and presentations by nationally known authors and public figures; film series on a variety of topics; access to technology such as the FABLAB for aspiring inventors and entrepreneurs; a host location for the Region IV Science Olympiad and outreach programs to K-12 Education.
