National Kidney Foundation of Michigan offers help to seniors needing food assistance

FLINT, MICH. – (May 13, 2021) – It’s important to eat right — even when money is tight. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) helps people with limited incomes to buy the food they need to stay healthy. The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM), in partnership with the National Council on Aging (NCOA), has joined a nationwide effort to fight senior hunger by helping Michigan seniors aged 60 and over to apply and enroll in SNAP benefits. Contact NKFM for SNAP application assistance by calling 313-259-1574, ext. 3160, or emailing SNAP@NKFM.org. NKFM offers SNAP application assistance in English. For languages other than English, MIBridges offers free Language Assistance Services at 517-241-2112.

Seniors can use SNAP to buy healthy food, such as fruits and vegetables, bread, meat, and dairy products. Seniors who enroll in SNAP will get money every month on a special debit card they can use to buy food. It’s convenient — many grocery stores, farmers markets, and neighborhood stores accept SNAP. The nationwide initiative aims to help at least 40,000 older adults enroll.
