PRESS RELEASE: Choice Neighborhoods Steering Committee Meeting

Meet the Choice Neighborhoods Planning Consultants at the September Choice Neighborhoods Steering Committee Meeting

Flint, Michigan – September 15, 2015 – The Choice Neighborhoods Steering Committee will be holding its second meeting as the planning process moves forward for the initiative. The planning consulting firm, Camiros, will be in Flint from September 16-18 for their first site visit, and will attend the meeting. They will give a brief presentation and answer questions. The meeting will be held at the Atherton East Community room, 3123 Chambers St., Flint on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.

The Choice Steering Committee is comprised of a diverse array of area residents, educational partners, interested businesses, public safety representatives and members of both the Flint Planning Commission and Flint Housing Commission board. The role of the committee throughout the planning process is to serve as advocates for change in the South Saginaw and Atherton Rd. corridors. They play an essential role in communicating information and priorities to residents and community leaders.

A significant portion of the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative involves public engagement.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend the meeting, ask questions and find out about upcoming opportunities to be engaged in the process.

The City of Flint and Flint Housing Commission were selected as co-grantees and are one of only six cities nationally, that received a planning grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the amount of $500,000. This grant is for planning only over the next two years, which means that no significant changes will be happening immediately. The planning process, once completed, will result in a written Transformation Plan that will help steer the redevelopment and revitalization of Atherton East and the South Saginaw Corridor. The boundaries of the Choice Neighborhood initiative are (I-69, Grand Traverse St., Hemphill Road, and the City’s eastern edge.)

The Transformation Plan will outline the potential for redevelopment, identify potential funding sources and detail the needs of the community, identified by the community.
